In the hot summer of 2012, I got the band together to play 5 songs. Well, 6, but that Strokes cover just didn’t make it. But it was one of the most memorable times in the studio for me. Everybody was really focused, and there was no ego. David Smith, who worked on my first record, set up all the microphones and got just the sound I was looking for. Putting live August air onto 2″ tape.
Caroline No might not be my favourite Beach Boys song, but I’d just learnt all the chords and they were just too pretty not to try. I love Hans’ bass playing on this one, very lyrical. Read My Mind came out a bit earlier this year, and I can’t say enough enough about Phil’s drum part. He’s just so artful. Barstool Blues is really a beautiful song, especially when you get to slow it down like we did. On Heysátan, Adam and I made some tape loops, him on Saxophone and myself on bowed acoustic guitar. This is a song that came out when I was living in Iceland and, to this day, it still takes me back. And, lastly, Spanish Harlem Incident is a great song that, like a lot of Dylan songs, has all of these secret melodies inside of it. It’s a bit raggedy since at times we couldn’t hear each other in the studio, but I like how that feels. Some of my favourite recordings seem to fall apart each time I hear them, and sometimes that’s what keeps me together.
Anyhow, hopefully you’ll enjoy listening to these songs as much as we enjoyed playing them.
